Emory Art Gala 2010
What is the art gala?
A chance to display art from both on campus and from around the world.
The main goal of the Art Gala this year is to promote understanding and tolerance through the medium of art. We believe that the universal language of art is one of the few forms of expression that can transcend divisions like race, religion, and other boundaries we set up for ourselves. It is also important because this event promotes a celebration of diversity and a coming together of different races and faiths.
History of Art Gala and Today
For the past six years, the Muslim Student Association has been putting on the Art Gala during the Spring. The event has been single-handedly conducted by the Muslim Student Association in order to showcase the beauty of Islam, a side that is often ignored by the media. The average American fears Islam and the MSA felt that it was its duty to dispel that fear and ignorance and to communicate via artistic expression. This art show has featured a variety of aesthetic expressions with Islamic themes from all over world, including artwork by local artists, faculty, and students. This year, we are taking a grander approach and holding the event in the elegant Fox Theatre's Egyptian Ballroom.
We are honored to include the Mevlevi Order of America,
popularly known as the Whirling Dervishes, and their Postneshin Jelaleddin Loras as part of our event.
They will be doing the ceremonial whirling dance that serves as an expression of faith. Please come experience this wonderful opportunity to broaden your horizons!
